چکیده
Mechanical properties of the skeleton four antipatharians (the whip species Cirrhipathes anguina and Stichopathes cf. maldivensis, branched Cupressopathes abies pumila) living in shallow waters off southwestern coast Madagascar were investigated using a three-point bending test. The Young's modulus did not differ according to but was significantly higher distal segment colonies, compared with basal median segments. By contrast, flexural stiffness ones, species, other two segments, an observation consistent specific adaptation strong current environment. Although both cohabit identical flow conditions, are able maintain their stalk vertical position, whereas can readily bend over. This suggests that is linked contrasting feeding strategies different morphologies similar

Caribbean Shallow-water Black Corals (Cnidaria: Anthozoa: Antipatharia)
—Our aim is to provide a complete key and guide to the species of black corals from the Caribbean reefs at depths shallower than about 100 m. The key to the species is mostly based on colonial features that are recognized in the field, although some closely related species can only be differentiated by microscopic skeletal features. Each species is illustrated with one or more photos showing th...
متن کاملBlack corals (Cnidaria: Anthozoa: Antipatharia): first records and a new species from the Brazilian coast.
A new species, Cirripathes secchini (Cnidaria: Antipatharia) from the Abrolhos area (Bahia, Brazil) is described and constitutes the first record to this genus from Brazil. Two other species (Antipathes hirta, first record from the Southwestern Atlantic; and Antipathes fernandezi, first record from the Atlantic Ocean) are compared to the most recent redescriptions and new data on the size distr...
متن کاملRedescription of Antipathes dichotoma Pallas, 1766 (Cnidaria: Anthozoa: Antipatharia)
The species Antipathes dichotoma was established by Pallas in 1766 on the basis of a description given by Marsigli (1725) of a specimen collected in the Mediterranean off the coast of Marseille. Marsigli's specimen (Lithophyte no. 9) was described and illustrated as a loosely dichotomously branched colony with strong spines and a biserial arrangement of polyps, with each polyp appearing to have...
